Save Puri Sea Beach

Puri is situated at the eastern India. It is in the state of Odisha. The distance of Puri from the capital city of Odisha is 60 kilometers. It is connected by rail, bus and air travel. Due to presence of Lord Jagannath Temple and the once beautiful sea-beach since time immemorial people reached here. Throughout the year, we see the presence of large number of floating population.

Most people love to stay nearer to the sea as nearby sea beach area there have been many hotels and most of these are growing and encroaching land and there are perhaps no restrictions on concerned municipal areas as walking in between these roads have become extremely difficult. This article is not about marine drive road but it is on the sea beach as most of these sea sand areas is engulfed by these ever encroaching hotels.

In comparison with marine drive areas of Chennai or popularly known as Marina Beach, entire areas is full of trees and there is hardly any encroachment and this makes walking in these areas extremely easier. The Puri Sea is famous for its tide as the movement of tides reaching nearer to you provides awesome level of screenshot and that enhances imagination of tourists further.

Due to presence of large number of hotels nearer to the sea beach as well as concise the sand areas out there, then there is presence of so many hawkers meandering here and there and that makes walking through these sand even more difficult. If you happens to reach nearer to sea at sun rise of about half past five in the morning in the month of February you will find the rays of sun just spreading in line with the sea and the straight line makes it so smoother and wonderful experience to observe the presence of sea at its full strength and in between within these straight lines from sun to sea which is a purple line there would be birds flying everywhere into these lines as if they try to ride on these steps to reach towards heaven.

You will find at some point birds would stay on the sand which is wet because the tide just returned back and they try to drink water from the filter sand and there the straightest purple line would be seen out there. It seems for some time that you are at the stage of complete natural happenings and the happiness that comes out from within that front is so exotic and wonderful that it cannot be described in detail about it. One can only feel it with ones’ deeper understanding.

After walking out for some distance nearer to sea in its sand structure which of course solid and walking through it becomes the sense of immense satisfaction as there is no chance of getting into traffic as well as there is no chance of obstruction while you walk within these sands. Suddenly, my eyes filled with moist and almost deeply saddened to see the presence of death of Olive Ridley out there and this is mostly due to caught in between nets of fisherman who despite prohibitory orders continue to put their nets on the sea and to my utter surprise while walking for more distance within these roads I happen to see death of almost three more Olive Ridley.

What is utter disdain is that despite prohibitory orders for catching fishes in this part of land still there is brazenly opening out of local fishermen with their boat and then spread their net on the sea water and that makes the Olive Ridley to catch in between those places and that spells their doom at last. Then openly, these fishermen sell the sea fishes to travelers who bought these fish. While walking I have to cross from time to time so many of such nets which obstruct the sea-sands and make walking very difficult there in.

I could feel what should have been the last moments of these Olive Ridley when they are caught in between these sea water and the net as I have to slow down my walking speed and then bow down so that I could pass these nets which are in parts on sea shores. To my utter disdain some tourists are standing nearer to dead Olive Ridley and taking photographs and selfies and in this manner they forget the basic human values dealing with it and this makes me feel the sad that how come while we move towards greatness of technology but still forgetting the basic ingredients of life that should be more visible to us and should not we always be implanted to root rather than flying within these technological excellences par se.

Within these small stretches of sands due to encroachment of hotels, almost quarter of these places are covered by local people out there mostly from fisherman communities who put the chairs on sands and ask money from people who sat there and they ask for ten or twenty rupees to seat on it and what it makes is that it makes the distance to move nearer to the sea-shore shortened and who have given them permission to use these sands for commercial purposes?

Then after walking for some distances you would see on the sand there would be mostly sea-related things out there and waiting for people to purchase and that occupies some portion of the land and that makes walking and moving into these places more difficult than earlier anticipation. If you travel in between these places you would get the impression that you are moving in the land of unknown and where there is no law and order for controlling of these unwarranted and perhaps unregistered so called businessmen who occupies the sea-sands and shores of their wishes and whims and if they could they even go beyond the sea and occupies the water portion of sea too.

Then from place to place you would find presence of so called photographers who used to contact with tourists and ask them to photo shoot on the sea shores and as far as my knowledge goes they have the association and their number are so much that if you cross two meters one person is there and sometimes they compel visitors and then sometimes argue with them for no reason and the walking within these sands in the presence of these so called amateur photographers becomes extremely difficult.

Then from distance to distance on the sea shore there are presence of ostriches and horses and their owners would go to visitors and ask them whether they would seat on it and they charge differently for seating on it and differently on moving to some distance and they would not clean the places out there and the stools of these animals tend to stay within these sands forever. They would not provide passage to you and even they would not clean their stools and who have permitted to use these innocent animals to be utilized for business purposes.

If you look at those person who are with these animals tend to cover up the entire sand space and it is almost difficult to cross over these place as on one side the advent of sea-tide and on the other hand the presence of gathering of large number of people tend to cover entire sea-sands on these places. You would definitely feel the pain out there while walking across sea-sands and while you are moving into these seas on the morning but the amount of commercialization makes the beauty of natural surroundings difficult to grasp and understand. While moving here and there you would find that some persons with plenty of chief necklaces of white in color and urging visitors to buy them and if not sometimes argues with them for no reason and that makes to feel that why such the level of commercialization are allowed here.

Most of these necklaces are duplicated, but it is being told that these are made of pearls extracted out from Puri sea. Just look at the mind set of these sellers who go to such extra yards while dealing with marketing aspects but tend to forget all of these ethics on its way. Many time’s visitors used to buy these with handsome money while completely forgetting that these are duplicated pearls. Some tend to sell some different types of stone consisting of black, maroon and purple and they sold these by tending to say that these they got from the sea.

To add to the wood in between, there is the presence of large wooden boats and some new motor boats out there. That obstructs the entire stretches of land and also there is no regulation here as of now of should be paid in order to move with these motor boats so that these people should not demand so much from visitors.

Bhilai Steel Plant Is Rightly Considered As The Jewel In The Crown Of SAIL

After the liberalization, Privatization and Globalization (LPG) process in the early 1990s, the organizations have come to understand the fact that the people are the centre of the whole system. For creating a performing organization and to sustain the performance, HRD orientation needs, to be top down and should also involve the line managers to ensure sustainable peak performance.

It is evident that most of the problems in an organization are human related, as human beings are dynamic and complex. Hence, human resource development is a challenging job. Moreover, unless organizations learn to tune human resources, success will be elusive. HRD has very close relationship with number of human activities as well as functional activities of the organization.

The Indian economy has changed a tot in the last few years, with most of the giant organization going for mergers and acquisitions. (MCIE data-Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) However, the success rate is very slow because of the cultural mismatch and failure to manage human resources properly.

We cannot differentiate successful organizations on the basis of technology that they are using; it is basically people and their way of managing the organizations that is a differentiating factor between successful organizations. Thus, HRD has to play a strategic role in realizing the business goals of organizations rather than being perceived only as a support service.

According to J.R.D. Tata (1943) “It is clear if your labor relation programme is to be really effective, it should embrace every subject and every activity bearing upon a worker’s employment, or affecting his family. It should carry out not merely the negative task of removing discontent, but the positive one of creating containment.”

So, HRD has a very close relationship with the perceptions, behavior and attitude of people. It throws a lightning impact on group dynamisms, work cultures of employees.

In the 50, there was a strong belief that employees were recruited not to question ‘why’ but only ‘to do-and-die’. In the 60s’ terms like manpower, staff and personnel came to be used. In the late 70s, people realized that beyond a point, productivity depended on people. The Indian organizations are experiencing some transitions and changes. The workforce of the 50s and 60, have retired. The middle level is now at the top with the hangover of all possible middle class values. The new generation of MBA, are pouring into industrial organizations. Young executives in their mid-30s are heading HRD/HRM divisions in big companies due to the unprecedented advancement of Information Technology.

Most multinational companies have a long held view that a person who is proficient in certain techniques and skills can be an effective manager anywhere in the world. Of late, however, there has been a growing awareness that to be successful managers must adopt their expertise to the cultural and economic context in which they operate. References to national or regional variations such as the American or European style of management have become common. Along with the economic development, Asia is also evolving its own style of management. A blend of old and new, it has strong elements of Asian cultures and values.

Life as a whole:

The concepts of loyalty, duty, happiness, honor and justice within this framework find a unique expression in the behaviors of Asians. In the Asian view, economic life cannot be seggrated from life as a whole. People cannot be treated as a more units who produce profit. Profit is not defined as only money but sum total of human happiness. For a western employee, job is primarily a business of contract. To an Asian, it is a personnel relationship.

To the Asian mind, success becomes meaningful when imbued with a social purpose. A good manager is not simply competent but also compassionate, one who protects the livelihood of employees, e.g. one of the foremost achievements of Bangkok Bank, that the bank has never initiated a lay off program throughout its 43 years history. Long before the world took notice of the life long employment practices in Japan, the workers in most Asia societies were treated as members of extended family.

Head and Heart

From the Asia perspective, a manager who is compassionate also has high integrity. A senior manager is like the head of the family and is often approached by subordinates for help and advice on personal problems (Banchong somboonpakorn, manager of Thai Chemicals Corporation).

According to Jeremy Pickle (regional President of West big Corporation) Asia managers, especially Indian managers are two types: SHAMs (Standard Hybridized Asian Manager) CRAMs (Culturally responsive Asian Managers) . Now the trend is SHAMs are gradually giving way to CRAMs.

BSP is a huge and complex industry involving huge quantities and skills of diverse nature and that too in large numbers. HRD at Bhilai examines how the workforce is enabled to develop and utilize its full potential, aligned with the company’s objectives. Acharya Vinobha Bhave (3rd January, 1964), said on Bhilai “To-day I am changing the name of Bhilai. I am rechristening it as “Bhalai”, meaning welfare. The welfare of India will be reflected here.

As BSP, has been considered as an integrated Steel Plant, it has carrying the biggest burden to build better work systems. (a. work and job design, b. Compensation & Recognition) employee education, training and development, employee well-being and satisfaction (a. work environment, b. employee support services, c. Employee satisfaction).

Year 2004-05 for BSP has been significantly eventful in terms of production, productivity, quality, accolades and rewards in the face of unprecedented challenges posed by the competing steel industry – domestic and abroad – as a whole. HRD practices of Bhilai have all along been a great catalytic agent in the process of transformations of Bhilaians towards the unified goal of achieving excellence. A significance proportion of the programmes have been dedicated to upgrade the computer competency of our employees, as most of the elements of decisions have to be computer savvy.

Bhilai is poised to manufacture 7MT of hot metal, 6.7 MT of crude steel and 6.2 MT saleable steel by 2012. Training activities related to multi-skilling, multi tasking have been accepted as an on going general feature of the plan, looking into the needs of critical skill to be developed in most of the shops.

The present compendium as a ready reckoner, therefore, will prove to be of immense value to all HRD practioners who have themselves right from the beginning towards the creation of an innovative, entrepreneurial culture in the large organization through competent, responsive and committed workforce.

We live in an age in which communication between people is essential to achieving our shared goals of development and peaceful consistence. New innovation in information and communication technologies has increased exponentially our capacity to connect with each other. It is up to us to use to harness the potential of these technologies in our work to extend the benefits of education, health care, trade and environmental protection to all . (FROM UN SECRETARY GENERAL MR. KOFI ANAN ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD TELECOM DAY 2005 MAY, 17).

Human communication has always been a combination of intellect and emotion – a characteristic that helps to define our shared humanity. Our information society has a way of reminding us of this reality, often in a dramatic fashion.

Looking ahead to Tunis, the true test of an equitable information society will be the extent to which today’s powerful knowledge-based communication tools are able to connect different people. (Mr. Yoshio UTSUMI – Secretary- General (International Telecommunication Union).

Bhilai Steel Plant is rightly considered as the jewel in the crown of SAIL. This position is not merely because of the efforts in the field of production, productivity and quality of the product but also due to good communication system in the plant. [S.K. Jain, GM I/c (Works)] [On the occasion of World Telecom Day, 17th May, 2005, a seminar in the assembly hall of BTI, 4.05PM.]

“I am happy to mention that in the recent past Bhilai Steel Plant has created huge infrastructure in the area of ICT. Many new initiatives like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Knowledge Management (KM) are being implemented to transform BSP into a futuristic organization. R.P.Singh, MD, BSP (Souvenir, world Telecom Day, Bhilai, 17th May, 2005).

Forced Occupation at Grand Road, Puri

Posing a straight challenge to law enforcing authority and municipality members, some influential people, forcefully opened “shoe-stand” in front of the famous Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri. The shoe stand is straight in front of “Patitapabana” in front of auspicious Lord of Universe “Lord Jagannath”. In earlier times, some parts of famous “Emara Matha” was broken into to make way widen the road in front of temple, and in this way the primary aim was to clear the “forced occupation” in front of Lord Jagannath Temple as well as to restore sanctity of this famous Heritage.

Desire is the obstacle to liberation:

Some influential people energized from the support of political power have created a shop through invading ten feet of the grand road just in front of “Patitapabana” of Lord Jagannath Temple. Powerful, political people are creating all these harakiri straight under the nose of the law enforcing authorities and municipality people. Now, good citizens of this ancient town are questioning the ability of both these institutions who have sole responsibility to promote peaceful environments in and around all these areas.

At the grand road of Puri, in front of the famous Lord Jagannath Temple, are being difficult to manage due to the advent of large scale of population from around the world and now with these forced occupation, slowly grand road is converting into a narrow lane. Government agencies are surprisingly silent on these matters. Due to large khaja-pati” in front of Emara Math, the entire area became a narrow zone, and in 2012, administration breaks 15 feet areas of this famous heritage in order to widen the road, but after that the same khaja shop keepers are back in those places and it is being said in people’s circle as all these shops are being protected by influential political people.

Emara Math is a 700 year old heritage and the administration did not think twice before breaking some parts of it but now in those parts people from political parties are making a show stand and that is narrowing the line of the grand road. Earlier, it was decided that the areas which have been broken is to be assimilated with roads but after almost one year there is no single decision which leads it to this manner. The administration failed to take back those forced occupation and the incident is now almost two years old.

So, now the question arises, if the government could not enforce the law of the land there, then why a glorious history of 700 years of a myth is to be broken in parts? There are many unanswered questions which are yet to be solved and how to find all these answers and why the administration is not dispersing forced occupation in and around areas of splendid road just in front of the famous Lord Jagannath temple is still not answered. Those khaja shops have opened their temporary shops in those areas and that part of temple land is being taken over them and the road in those parts is being similarly covered and in day time the traffic becomes extremely difficult to control in and around in those areas. Those khaja shopkeepers have blessings of political people and they are openly selling these by openly violating laws of lands.

Now the shoe-stand in those locations have advanced five feet creating many blockages in and around areas nearer to this illustrious Lord Jagannath Temple. Now, from Sunday, a new show stand nearer to famous Emara math which is now advancing 10 feet towards the road and it is making many difficulties to people. People are questioning shoe-stand in front of Lord Jagannath Temple and raising the issue of ethics from them. Countless people believe a shoe stand just in front of Lord Jaganath Temple is unethical and unjust and this should be removed straight away without any delay. In order to earn money, influential people advanced this show stand nearer to the road and virtually near to Jagannath temple but law enforcing authority and municipality is not listening to what people are worried about.

Devotees from all around the world questioning on what morality and on what basis law enforcing authority and municipality have become silent spectators to all these misguided acts? Law enforcing authorities are saying what should we do, it is primarily the job of municipality but they are remaining silent as it is evident as most of their members are patronizing these shops, and why they should be stopping as it is their primary personal revenue generation elements.

Law enforcing authorities are stopped by big political powers and for this they could not stop these shops from mushrooming in these holy areas. They are saying the administration has to help them in order to act and it is true as administration is stopping them and in a way of handicapping them from performing these tasks. Higher law enforcing authorities are saying they are aware of these matters and they are considering action against those forced occupants.

Auspicious Sunday and traffic problems:

At this auspicious Sunday, in the month of Pusha or January in English, many influential people reached Jagannath temple and their vehicles have covered most portions of the grand road and closing half of width of the road and creating undesired traffic problems in and around these areas. Traffic police became a mute spectator and could not stop anarchy of lands in and around in these areas. People have been worried about all these rush hours and have difficult to find the way out from these rush places. In a private convention hall near to badashankha, there was a get together and many influential people all around attended the meeting.

Political class also joined these meetings. All those influential people have parked their vehicles in the middle of the road thus obstructing basic communication medium available to people. Almost half portion of the road had been covered by their vehicle. No one from the municipality as well as law enforcing authorities who have been travelling in these roads lodged complain or take any action on these people. On this Sunday many people reached to Puri to have pious glance of Lord Jagannath and this adds a problem as most roads have been taken over by vehicles of these influential people as well as shops for these forced occupants. Traffic police are facing huge difficulties in controlling devotees, but they are not taking action against those influential people who have parked their vehicle in the middle of roads.

One person collided with auto taxi due to intemperate rush and unable to find a free space for these mob. Cars are parked where people tend to walk and for this he just has to change the side of walking and running auto from other side collided with him. Law enforcing authorities are trying to convey all these messages to influential people, but they have not listened to their request. Inside the convention hall many considerate people are there and for this they are unable to convey these messages to them. Due to huge number of vehicles stranded there it is virtually impossible to control vehicles out there as one writer is not sufficient to control already huge number of cars.
