In the absence of regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dependablemiddle-order batsman who can bowl military medium pace has been the most consistent and dynamic batsman of the Indian cricket team for some time. He was captain of the victorious under-19 Indian cricket team which won2008 under 19 world cups held in Malaysia.
He is the symbol of next-generation of Indian cricketer, who presents fearless attitude and want to deliver outside Asia with superlative performance coupled with brilliant resonance and fierce determination to stay afloat in alien conditions.
His superb showing at Australian proves to be one of the best of many performances which simply speak better when we think he is the first foreign batsman to score four centuries after 85 years. This goes on showing how it is difficult to score much at down under and how his mettle fighting with odds of sledging and constant disturbances from opposition bowlers backed upon by sledging crowds who always seem to be selfish while supporting home teams.
He represents Delhi in first-class cricket and Royal Challengers. Bangalore in Indian Premier League.
The rise of Kohli from under-19 cricketer to new status has been phenomenal. Great Indian cricketer, Rahul Dravid is all praise for this talented cricketer while remembers his first association with him in IPL, and he says, Kohli always wants to learn from his mistake and he did not want to repeat his mistakes all along and he does not want to continue repeating his mistakes.
He is an avid learner and a great listener and that benefits him immensely. He has now the largest twitter followers of cricketer and is most popular and a perfect youth icon amongst all. In the disastrous last Australian tour of Team India, where most seniors failed to perform, from amongst all stood tall, Kohli by scoring a scintillating century which goes on to show the future bright prospect of the Indian team.
His attitude is criticized by many but personally, the author is an avid Indian cricket fan has been the most serious step of inspiration all around. His debut One day international of the Indian cricket team at the age of 20 and within three years India won its second ODI world cup.
He has 21 ODI centuries to his cricket and 10 test centuries and out of it, six are against Australia and five of them against Australia at down under. All these tasks speak of multiple volumes of talent of India’s new Test captain and in the latest of his sheer grit and determination while scoring a stupendous unbeaten century at Sydney speaks of the volume of his talent and performance abilities.
He has scored 1000 or more runs in three or more consecutive years and this has been made by Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Saurabh Ganguly before him. It is a fantastic achievement. He has more than 50 averages in one day internationals. He has scored five consecutive fifties for two occasions and this holds a record. He was ICC’s ODI player of the year for 2012.
After he became captain of India in Tests, he scored two centuries in each innings and it was only the second time a debut captain had done this. He scored three centuries in three successive innings as captain since his debut and it is he the only debut Test captain of the world to achieve such fit.
His aggressive attitude and super positive mettle and fighting opposition with equal ground make him the most choice ability test captain of India. Most of the foreign players in down under have to constantly undergo the continuous process of sledging from home captain but Viral knows it better and his mental fight with crowds and Australian cricket in the Boxing Day Test match has been phenomenal.
Kohli also smashed the fastest century by an Indian against Australia and overall it is the seventh fastest in the world. Kohli’s record against Australia is inspiring and it has been a great presenter of inspiration for modern day cricketers. The manner in which he plays his innings at Sydney 2014 Australia Tours has been inspirational as he presents aggression with consistency and India able to play over 100 overs and still continuing its fight against Australia.
He was also the man of the tournament in T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. This goes on showing the performance level of Kohli in all forms of games. He has the heavily tattooed arm with a golden dragon on his forearm and this apparently signals his pure luck signs. Kohli has 48 batting average while batting at number four in victorious under-19 cricket World Cup in 2008.
He was praised by great cricketers for his tactical captaincy moves and that fetches much desired under-19 world cup for India. From this tender age, he has shown captaincy talent and proved his mettle. During his captaincy, it has been proved that he has never ever affected his batting form and he performed better while his captaincy is on.
Kohli hated being on the bench this signifies his hunger for success and he wants to perform better and make India the most top-ranked team in the world. Kohli made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka when both Sachin and Sehwag were injured in 1998. He opened for India in the presence of two stalwarts and scored only 12 but during that ODI series, he scored a well made and fighting 37 in one innings which marks his stature as a long-standing player for India in the future.
This helps India to level the series and it was the third match of that series and in the next match, Kohli scored his first one day international fifty which helped India to win first ODI series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Later on, he was to be with the bench for one or more year and in the next year, in the fourth ODI, in the absence of injured Yuvraj, he got his chance against home series against Sri Lanka and scored his first ODI century and shared brilliant third wicket partnerships with Gambir of 224 runs.
Here, he proved his talent and comes under the notice of experts. In the first chance, he gets from the injury of Sachin and Sehwag and in the second instance while regular Yuvraj was injured he grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scored handsomely there. Kohli became the fastest Indian to score 1,000 runs in one-day international innings. Within a short span, he scored 21 One day international centuries and slowly getting the status of the most versatile batsman of the world.
After the retirement of top batsman from test teams, it was Kohli who performed relentlessly and able to succeed and perform for India in its quest to garner and reach the top position. Kohli was preferred over Raina in 2011 winning the world cup. He was the first Indian to score the century in World Cup debut match and performs excellently there. His brilliant 83 runs partnership with Gambir in the world cup final against Sri Lanka is instrumental in getting the upper hand in the world cup final.
He has the moderately successful world cup with an average of 35 but two of his important innings played against the West Indies and in the final with partnership against Yuvraj and gambir respectively make India back to the limelight. India became the first team host team to win the world cup.
In his debut Test series at the West Indies, he struggled against swinging balls in 2011 and failed miserably there. He amassed only 76 runs in five innings and predictable to short-pitched balls from Fidel Edwards. Soon, after that, he practised and succeeded in getting ahead with all his faults and scored heavily against fast bowlers.
He never permits his faults to loom large on his batting and subsequently he performed brilliantly against short-pitched pieces of stuff without slight signs of hesitations. In the difficult tour of Australia in December 2011, at Sydney Cricket Ground, he was fined half of his match fee for showing signs to unruly spectators. In a post-match interview, he stressed that he scored eight centuries this year in one-day internationals. He questioned people who are against his temperament and aggressive attitudes.
Even in this current down under tour of 2014, in the Boxing Day test match where he comes under heavy sledging from Australia team and spectators, he stood with his ground and scored swashbuckling 169, his career highest score and showed his mettle and verbal ability in the post-match press conference. Kohli was top scorer in that horror series of down under and scored the only century for touring team in Adelaide Test Match.
In the tri-series subsequent to test match series at down under in 2011, Kohli was the only century scorer and his brilliant century which chased 321 runs of Sri Lanka and keeps hopes of India alive to enter into finals has shown his great potential to play on bouncy and short-pitched tracks. In that match, he scored 24 runs in an over from fast bowler Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka. Malinga with his unorthodox action was pretty fast and difficult to track, but he had made a mockery of his fast inswinging yorkers to send those out of parks easily.
2012 Asia Cup, he scored 183 against Pakistan which proved to be the highest individual score against Pakistan by any country, surpassing Brian Lara’s record in miles. It was also the highest individual score in Asia Cup surpassing previous records. In the News Zeland tour of India, he scored his second Test century with an assertive manner.
From his career point of view, till now it is evident that he has more success in one day international than in test form. Kohli became the captain of India one day international team in the triangular tournament in the West Indies when Dhoni was injured in the year 2013.
In the year 2013, in the home series against Australia, he scored 52 Ball centuries surpassing India’s record of the fastest century by Virender Sehwag by eight balls. Eventually, this is the seventh fastest century in the one-day international match.
This was fastest against Australia and third fastest century while chasing a total. He is the foremost international batsman to core five successive fifties in five innings twice. Kohli is a naturally aggressive batsman with sound techniques. He bats in the middle order and occasionally opened for India.
He has an open-chested stance and many similar to great Sachin Tendulkar. He is a brilliant fielder but his fielding at sleep in misery. He is great for running the batsman out and recent run out of Shaun Marsh in the Boxing Day Test match is the testimony to this. He throws directly behind the bowler to run him out of the score of 99.
Many former cricketers hope only Kohli will break records of Sachin in future. Vivian Richards feels Kohli matched his style of playing and he supports his aggressive nature while at the field. Every great batsman has the style of its own and while inside those styles he performs better, in fact after steep Australian sledging during Boxing Day test match he himself called upon at media that he liked this approach and till to date oppositions not able to know that all these aggressive attitudes simply makes his performance better.
Martin Crow once wrote a column describing Kohli as the culmination of three modern greats of Indian Cricket Sachin, Dravid and Shewag respectively.
Kohli Lead Team India in the first Test beginning from December 9 in the absence of regular captain Dhoni. His performance was excellent and India was almost reaching the stage of winning this test match. Following Dhoni’s retirement from Test captaincy after Brisbane Test, Kohli was declared as the official test captain of India. In the second test, he dropped underperform opener Shikhar Dhawan and shift new player Rahul to open spot.
Rahul only in his second test match scored a century and Kohli is unbeaten on 140 after oink day of the Sydney Cricket Test. India under the captaincy of Kohli showed resistance having played over 120 over so far and only half of the site has been inside the pavilion.
In his two captaincy tests, he has shown his wit and capacity to drive a young team which has an average age of 22 in this Test squad to move forward beyond the scalp of series of horror series of complete loss of all Test matches in trying circumstances.
