FREE DEFRAGMENTERS

Best Free Disk Defraggers

A short Introductory……….

The content of cognition behind file defragmentation is an easy pat on the shoulde and not involved or complicated. Work done in addition to regular working hours as a disk drive become full and space becomes hard to find files may have to be stored in several separate physical locations on the drive rather than in a single Very close or connected in space or time location. the normal course of event activities such as creating, modifying and deleting files further add to this process of Destroy the completeness of files.

This separation and fragmentation of files into separate bits on a disk is called fragmentation. Fragmentation Lower the grade of disk performance because it takes longer to Get or find back a file that Lacking orderly continuity in pieces all over a hard drive than it does to retrieve one that is located in a single location.

File defraggers work by Examining minutely or intensely the disk and Cause to move, both in a concrete and in an abstract sense into a certain direction together all the divide into components or constituents bits. With regard to fundamentals although not concerning details ,this should make better performance.

However with Belonging to the modern era multi-head disks with large buffers and having the capacity for thought and reason especially to a high degree electronics , this gain is limited in size or scope than we might think, often only a few percent.

Belonging to the modern era defraggers however, do more than defragment; they also attempt to modify to achieve maximum efficiency in storage capacity or time or cost file location for maximum performance. Different products use different optimization methods but a common technique is to place the most frequently used files at the outer edge of the hard drive where data transfer rates are highest due to the higher rotational speed of the disk.

The defragmentation will just about improve process or manner of functioning or operating..As a rule , users tend to build an appraisal that is too high the gains .In practical applications a drive in a home PC that is defragmented daily is unlikely to show capable of being detected gain over one that is defragmented weekly. What is true is that a drive that have at no time in the past or future been defragmented will show genuine performance gains when it is first defragged By contrast; on the other hand subsequent regular defrags may produce only just barely adequate or within a lower limit further or added gains.

In my accumulation of knowledge or skill that results from direct participation in events or activities, monthly defrags are about good for the average user. Addition defrags produce limited or below average in number or quantity or magnitude or extent performance improvement but can decrease in value of an asset due to obsolescence or use on your disk. The totality of surrounding conditions that demand very high disk process or manner of functioning or operating may derive a benefit from from more regular defrags .

Why Defragment Disks?

Hard disks are by far the slowest component in your computer. CPU and memory work much faster than hard disks because they do not have moving parts. Therefore fragmented disks often become a bottleneck of the system performance.

Besides causing slowdowns, fragmentation makes the hard drive disk heads move frequently when reading files which leads to freeze-ups and system crashes. It is important to keep your disks defragmented and optimized as much as possible.

Fragmentation is caused by creating and deleting files and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the Internet. Computers do not necessarily save an entire file or folder in a single space on a disk; they’re saved in the first available space. After a large portion of a disk has been used, most of the subsequent files and folders are saved in pieces across the volume.

When you delete files or folders, the empty spaces left behind are filled in randomly as you store new ones. This is how fragmentation occurs. The more fragmented the volume is, the slower the computer’s file input and output performance will be.

Defragmentation is the process of rewriting non-contiguous parts of a file to contiguous sectors on a disk for the purpose of increasing data access and retrieval speeds. Because FAT and NTFS disks can deteriorate and become badly fragmented over time, defragmentation is vital for optimal system performance.

Free Disk Defragmenters

1 . Windows’ Disk Defragmenter:

Many people use within normal everyday experience; common and ordinary; not strange with Windows’ Disk Defragmenter . It uses existing as an essential constituent or characteristic Windows’ inbuilt GUI; not designed for physical appearance. It is plain, but simple and having precise or logical relevance to the matter at hand. The legend is comprised of four colors, giving a vague, visual representation of fragmented files, contiguous files, system files, and free space on the drive.

Inbuilt on windows

2.DIsckeeper Lite:

The next product was Diskeeper Lite version 7, an older, a prominent aspect of something reduced from version of the commercial Diskeeper 2007 program. This product is not available from the Diskeeper site but is obtainable or accessible and ready for use or service from many download sites.

you can get version 9 of Diskeeper Lite. It forms an element of Intel’s large (89MB) Desktop Utilities package which can be downloadable from the Intel site below . If you unzip the file you’ll see Diskeeper V9 Lite in the folder ../3rdparty/Diskeeper/. I it seems perfectly legitimate way to obtain the program on a single computer . Download from here .

3. Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.1

Disk fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup and shutdown and sometimes to system failures. Auslogics Disk Defrag® is designed for fast optimization of today’s modern hard disks. Get the maximum performance out of your expensive hardware investments. And it’s absolutely FREE.

As far as looks go, the interface in this one was appealing to the general public. It is clean and professional, complete with pie graphs and bar graphs which illustrate the ratio of used space to free space (already available in Windows Explorer), as well as a before-and-after comparison to indicate comprehend advancement of drive process or manner of functioning or operating.

4. IObit Smart Defrag Beta 2.01.

It has fully loaded console and unreserved prominent aspect of something , including the condition of being automatically operated or controlled and defragmentation of system files, express defragmentation, is good in this which ran faster than any other product, but reduced boot time with it also .Two other tests were conducted, including a comprehensive defragmentation, and an express defrag with system directories included. Both of these methods completely disabled Windows Logoff, and the system could not be shut down or rebooted save by a hard shutdown. Though it is beta product and in future expecting more improvement of this product .

5. JkDefrag by J.C. Kessels

Not an outstanding performer, but Deeply or markedly affected or influenced me It in a reflex manner defragmented all of the drives it detected, including flash drive and external USB hard drive This defragmenter actually fits on a floppy disk or any other portable device, and doesn’t require installation. In the cases of the command line and screensaver versions, it’s merely a case of copy-paste and requiring human effort for an arrangement of parts or elements. The program is completely automatic, there are no buttons and no pull-down menu’s.

Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), and versions for Windows X64.

There is no “setup” or “install” and no configuration file. All you have to do is download the zip and unpack. It contains the following 3 programs:

JkDefrag.exe

Windows version. This is what most people will use. No installation or configuration necessary, it’s ready to run and will automatically process all the mounted, writable, fixed volumes on your computer

JkDefragCmd.exe

Commandline version. Specially designed to be run automatically in the background, or from administrator scripts. See the “running” chapter below for a list of commandline options, and the “Frequently Asked Questions” on how to run it automatically with the Windows Scheduler.

JkDefragScreenSaver.scr + JkDefragScreenSaver.exe

Screen saver version. Move (or copy) these two files to the “system32” folder on your harddisk (usually “c:WindowsSystem32” or “c:WinntSystem32”). It will automatically become visible in the list of screensavers as “JkDefrag screensaver” and can be used just like any other screensaver (right-click somewhere on your desktop and select Properties/Personalize, then select the Screen Saver tab).
Note: on Vista the screensaver only works with User Account Control turned off (see Control Panel, User Accounts, Turn User Account Control on or off).
Note: screensavers do not lengthen the lifespan of CRT and LCD monitors, contrary to popular belief. It is better to let the monitor be turned off by the Windows energy saving settings.

The Windows version of JkDefrag shows a high-detail map of the harddisk, refreshed 3 times per second. Bottom-left of the window is the beginning of the harddisk. The colors used are:

  • Black: empty
  • Dark-green: in use by unknown data
  • Light-Green: regular files
  • Green: spacehogs
  • Yellow: fragmented
  • Red: unmovable
  • Pink: system files
  • White: busy

6. Contig v1.54

By Mark Russinovich

from SysInternals, a robust, free, command line utility. It’s superfast fast, and safe but is a pain to use however excessive software has built an excellent user interface for Contig called “Power Defragmenter” that turns Contig into a really usable product.

These above defragmented tools are useful for performing a general defragmentation of disks, but while most files are defragmented on drives processed by these utilities, some files may not be. In addition, it is difficult to ensure that particular files that are frequently used are defragmented – they may remain fragmented for reasons that are specific to the defragmentation algorithms used by the defragging product that has been applied. Finally, even if all files have been defragmented, subsequent changes to critical files could cause them to become fragmented. Only by running an entire defrag operation can one hope that they might be defragmented again.

Contig is a single-file defragmenter that attempts to make files contiguous on disk. Its perfect for quickly optimizing files that are continuously becoming fragmented, or that you want to ensure are in as few fragments as possible.

Conclusion

Of the free products Diskeeper 7 Lite produced the biggest improvement though to be honest, the margin between all the products was negligible . A final choice may rest more on features and the ease of use rather than performance. In the end the compact JKDefrag and Diskeeper 7 Lite was the product that I liked most but your choice may well be different.
